The
Bravìo delle botti takes place, every year, on the
last Sunday of August.
The whole town celebrates. During the week, which precedes
the race, all citizens are engaged in the organization of
the manifestation and welcome all tourists.

I
myself, like every year, made "the seal” to brand
the barrels. The ritual, in fact, gives each “contrada”
a barrel, which is identical to all the others. Every barrel,
therefore, is carefully controlled.
If it gets through the strict imposed controls, it can "be
branded".
All this happens on the Cathedral steps, in a crowded square
of “contradaioli” and tourists.

| Le
Coste won this year. It had not won since1983; it was to be
expected that Le Coste would win, as it got a good placing
in the most recent manifestations. The draw awarded them eighth
barrel at the starting line. |

| A
beautiful victory for colours yellow-blue, after many years
they have won the beautiful Bravìo painted by Pierluigi
Olla and dedicated to Pope Marcello II Cervini.

As
usual, it was an unforgettable week, for Poliziani and tourists.
The barrel race represents the end of an eventful week. The
contradas compete among themselves from road decorations to
parties. During the week, the children of the contradas, with
their colours and customs discreetly invite tourist to their
contrada to celebrate with them.

Every
evening, the citizens are engaged in the "trials".
In the crowd pushers, preceded by Municipal Police, go over
the route; flag-wavers rehearse their performances...

feast could appear like one of the many celebrated in Italy,
but it is not so.

We
have re-discovered this feast from our ancestors, after
centuries that it had been abandoned. It is not simply an
event for tourists but the contradas and the feast are a
vital of our way of life... |
