Take a Walk

Montepulciano is a wonderful small town, gently lying on a hill, still preserving its Middle Ages and Renaissance imprint.

Visitors find a medieval town, with unaltered evidences of its past, but perfectly organized to allow the tourist to enjoy the best assistance without being "suffocated".
Politians (Montepulciano citizens) have been clever enough to create a "human" environment, and to propose Montepulciano as a cultivated destination for an intelligent tourism, through the recovery and the enhancement of their ancient link with the land and the handicraft.

Walking by the small roads of Montepulciano you feel peace of mind. Politians are simple and kind persons. Very few souvenir shops. Many rural and wine firms offering free tasting of their products: cheese, sausages, conserves, and most of all wines.

The important palaces tell you of the economic and social power of the noble families who lived there. Have a look at Palazzo Cervini, Batignani, Contucci, the house of Poliziano, the wonderful Palazzo Comunale (14th century) and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Palazzo Neri - Orselli contains the Civic Museum which exhibits a wide collection of paintings.

In the Cathedral (1592-1630) you can admire the "Madonna col Bambino" by Sano di Pietro and some Della Robbia terracottas.
Sant'Agostino Church was made by Michelozzo. Sant'Agnese Church (XIV sec.) contains a wonderful Crucifix from the 13th century.

From the Fortress, destroyed and re-built several times, you get a picturesque view of the valley. Below, S. Biagio Church is an harmonious architecture by Antonio da Sangallo il Vecchio.
